He worked as a welder for ARCO Pipeline from 1950 -1972; was owner/operator of Big John’s Grocery/Restaurant and Catering Service from 1972 until his retirement in 2012. His popular restaurant was the last establishment which featured authentic Pennsylvania Dutch cooking in Reading.

John had been involved in the Reading/Berks County community for over 40 years; owning and operating a successful business, and always offering a helping hand for those in need. He was an individual of tremendous energy and devotion, always putting others ahead of himself; never asking for anything in return as he generously supported causes close to home, such as his church, the Northwest Swimming Association, Crime Alert Berks County, and Camp Cadet. He also demonstrated his concern for those abroad in distress by raising nearly $5,000 to aid victims of the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
