Obituary for James Gerald Ertz

James G. (Jerry) Ertz, 89, formerly of Whitfield, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, in Carmel, IN. Born April 3, 1929, in Nanticoke, PA, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Dougherty) Ertz.

Jerry moved to Reading at the age of 12, graduated from Reading High School in 1946, and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Japan during the occupation at the end of World War II, and later served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as a Sergeant for six years. To advance his professional career, Jerry took engineering courses at Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute and the University of Connecticut. In 1991, he retired as Manager of the Plant Engineering Department at Carpenter Technology in Reading.

Jerry was a loving husband and father, and his family meant everything to him. He was a true role model and an integral part of his children’s lives, serving as coach, scoutmaster, athletic booster, band supporter, and avid fan.

Jerry also had a huge impact on his nine grandsons, often seen in the stands watching their athletic events, attending school functions, and sharing his wisdom during engaging conversations. He was a long-time, active member of St. Ignatius Loyola Parish in Whitfield. Following his retirement, Jerry became an enthusiastic golfer, enjoying outings with his beloved wife Mickey and their loving friends, and with his fellow CarTech retirees.

Jerry was predeceased by his loving wife Mildred (Mickey) Jablonski, after 50 terrific years of marriage, and his three brothers: Frank, Jack, and Donald Ertz. He is survived by four children: David, husband of Carol (Ryan), Yarmouth, ME; Diane, wife of Charles Stiles, Wilmington, IL; Doreen, wife of Allen Ruffner, Noblesville, IN; and Douglas, husband of Debbie (Holland), Alamo, CA. He is also survived by nine grandsons and three great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, February 22, at 10:30am at St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church, 2810 St. Alban’s Drive, Sinking Spring. Friends may call from 9:30-10:30am at the church. To honor Jerry’s memory, donations may be sent in his name to St. Ignatius Loyola Memorial Fund, 2810 St. Albans Dr., Reading, PA 19608.
