Condolences

Condolence From: Todd Rosenstock
Condolence: My science teacher for two years, almost always smiling and generous with his time and positive energy. You had to deal with your wife's Alzheimer's for so many years, so sad. And you brought so much happiness into the teacher's groups after your retired. My mother was so glad to see you every time. I'll always remember how you never enforced the rule that the Student Council room was only for SC. Denise (RIP) and I used to sit in there and BS for a long time and you never said a word. Boy, there's been a special place for you in heaven for a long time. Bless you.

Condolence From: Tim Flowers
Condolence: I add my voice to many others', no doubt, in recognition of the sad news of Mr. Dowling’s death.

He was a leader, like no other, of high school students caught up in the fury of battle between mind and body, often at sea and seeking safe harbor. Mr. Dowling was that safe harbor and source of inspiration, guidance, and sound counsel. He seemingly was omnipresent in school and community life: tirelessly advising Student Council, Thoreau Society and local Boy Scout Troop 413.

His volunteer work did not end upon summer recess when it was off to Boy Scout Camp Shikellamy, where a Hollywood movie could have captured all the fun our troop had with Mr. Dowling as its leader.

His impish ways delighted; his knowledge of science and nature awed, his quick smile reassured, and his kindly and generous nature disarmed. I’d be hard pressed to find a better example of fellow man. Indeed, how pleased I was to reach the shores of Camp Shikellamy under his tutelage, yet surely would have followed Mr. Dowling to the ends of the earth.

His legacy is forever entwined with memories of Wyomissing High School; I so cherish the days spent in his company and remain deeply inspired by his example.

In Sympathy,

Tim Flowers

Condolence: It has been over 55 years since I last sat in Doc's class room and he still stands alone as the best teacher I have ever had. He was truly way ahead of his time both in terms of innovation and approach. We have lost a very caring and kind man. Rest in peace Doc! Well done good and faithful servant.

Condolence: Mr. Dowling was that teacher that forever changed the course of my life. His kindness and deep caring to all of his students, myself included, instilled a sense of confidence and acceptance for who we all were as individuals. He saw each student's strengths and talents and brought out the best of us with humor and deep caring.
He has left behind a wonderful legacy because he lives on in all the students he taught over the many years at Wyomissing.
Forever grateful to this man and the unconditional love he gave to so many.
What a very special human being!

Condolence: Bill was so much a part of my life. We go back over 60 years. Dottie was my best friend since we were in first grade so when she married Bill he was part of my life too. So many wonderful memories to cherish! I was their Maid of Honor and my daughter was their flower girl in their wedding. To my children they were always "Uncle Bill" and "Aunt Dottie". So glad we had that great visit at the nursing home several weeks ago. We will miss you but you are free from all the pain and with Dottie again.

Condolence: I was fortunate to have Mr.D as my science teacher for all 4 ears of high school. He was so intelligent and intuitive; a great teacher, mentor, and role model. He had an impact on me as I entered the teaching profession. He influenced so many people and definitely left the world a better place. Rest in peace Mr. D beside your love, Mrs. D.

Condolence: Bill Dowling was one of those remarkable teachers who positively influenced so many lives, both students and adults. He and his wife, Dottie, embraced their students as the children they never had. They devoted their attention and caring to improving their students' understanding while nurturing the inner individual. Bill loved teaching and helped his students learn difficult biology and chemistry concepts. He loved leading international trips, nature trips, and bringing international students to Wyomissing Area.
Bill was recognized as an outstanding teacher by the state of PA and admired by his fellow educators. I will be forever grateful that our three children were blessed to have him as their teacher and mentor. Judy Stoudt

Condolence: My father, Russ Shade (died in 1995), and Bill were friends.

This world is a different place without the two of them still in it.

Condolence From: Rick Hiller
Condolence: Doc was great. I, still today, always abide by his advice..."do as you oughta, add acid to water" and every time I hear the Tom Lehrer song about "The Elements" I think of him, as he played it for us in chemistry class. He was my Eagle Scout advisor and he was often seen at Shikellamy. Also spent many weekends spelunking the caves of the Virginville area with him. Thanks, Doc!

God rest his soul...... Rick Hiller (Class of 70)
