Obituary for Edmund Kurowski

Edmund Walter Kurowski, “Edgu,” April 4, 1925-April 12, 2018 passed peacefully at home from this life to eternal life.

He was the loving husband of Bernice Gerlach Kurowski, and loving father and grandfather to his son Michael and his wife Monica; granddaughters Nicole Montgomery, wife of Sam and Kaitlyn Kurowski and her partner Jeff Barry.

Ed was pre-deceased by his first wife Elizabeth (1925-1985) and his parents Anthony and Victoria and 12 brothers and sisters too numerous to mention. He is the last of the original “Kurowski Dynasty.”

Edgu, a 1942 graduate of Reading High School, lettered in basketball. He proudly served his country as a gunners mate (GM) in the United States Navy. Assigned to a merchant marine vessel, the “Lucky” Barlow, Ed engaged in combat in the Philippines during WW II. He spent his work career as a supervisor at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.

Ed was a longtime Berks County football official and served as the President of the Association. As a member for three decades, he was honored in 2004 for his outstanding service as a Berks County football official.

Living more than 60 years on South 15th Street, Edgu was lovingly referred to as “the Mayor” of South 15th Street. His presence will be missed.

In the latter decades of his life he enjoyed his time doing crossword puzzles, walking the trails at Grings Mill, traveling to Florida, New Jersey Beaches, and vacations in Downeast Maine.

His presence illuminated our lives and we cherish the time we were privileged to enjoy his company.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 Noon at St. Catharine's of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 4975 Boyertown Pike, Reading, PA 19606. A Memorial Mass will follow the visitation at 12 Noon in the church. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
