Obituary for George J. Thomas

George J. Thomas, 91, formerly of Leesport, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Berks Heim. Born March 2, 1927, in Reading, he was the second oldest of 15 children of the late Edward H. and Angeline (Jordan) Thomas. He was married for 53 wonderful years to Patricia A. (Gilmore) Thomas, who passed earlier this year, and their family takes great comfort knowing they are reunited again today.

George worked most of his life in the metal castings industry, starting his own firm, Quality Investment Castings, Inc., Blandon. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who dedicated much of his life to cutting and selling firewood, something he involved his children in when they were young.

More than anything, he truly loved his wife, Pat, showing her his devotion by helping her around the house, and even inspiring her to cook great Italian food. They enjoyed trips to the casinos together, playing cards with their friends, and just spending time together

George is survived by four children: Michael L., husband of Joan E. Schmidt, Sinking Spring; Richard J. Schmidt, Wernersville; Anne M., wife of Mark Goldman, Chesterbrook; and Tracy L., wife of Paul J. Tibbetts, Wernersville; eight grandchildren: Andrea L., wife of Captain Robert T. Rupp, New Bern, NC; Michelle L., wife of Rob Case, Annandale, NJ; Matthew M. Schmidt and fiancee Melissa High, Manheim; Brandon L. Schmidt and fiancee Kaitlyn Kozlowski, Alexandria, VA; Sarah A. Heck, Wernersville; Jessica L. Heck, Wernersville; Justin S. Heck, Wernersville; and Emily L. Tibbetts, Wernersville; and four great-grandchildren: Lyla Rose Rupp, Clara Jane Rupp, Michael M. Schmidt, and Mason R. Schmidt.

Also surviving are his sisters: Mary Ann and Carol, and brothers: Henry and William. He was predeceased by five sisters: Francis, Angeline, Josephine, Lucille and Louise, and five brothers: Charles, Michael, Edward, Joseph and Lewis.

A Celebration of George’s life will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, December 19 at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Friends may call from 10:30-11:00am at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Berks Heim’s A3 Unit for their compassion and care of George during his stay there.
