Obituary for Grace G. Hunter (Gabel)

Grace G. Hunter (Gabel)
Grace Gabel Hunter, 103, resident of The Highlands at Wyomissing for 28 years, passed away on November 16, 2017.

Grace was born in Reading on July 4, 1914, the daughter of the late John H. Gabel and Olivia (Deysher) Gabel. She spent her life in the Reading area, marrying Dr. John S. Hunter on September 3, 1938. For over forty years of their 73 years of marriage they lived at 117 Philadelphia Avenue, Shillington. In 1989, she and Dr. Hunter became charter residents of The Highlands at Wyomissing, moving there the first week it opened.

Grace was a graduate of West Reading High School. She graduated from West Chester Teachers College, now West Chester University, in 1932. She was a former first grade teacher in the West Reading Public Schools. Grace valued the friendships of some of her former pupils, who are now residents of The Highlands at Wyomissing.

Grace was a longtime member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Shillington. She was active as a Sunday School teacher when her children were younger, and also served as a Lay Reader. Grace was a member of the Berks Country Medical Society Alliance. She was a charter member and President of the West Reading Junior Woman’s Club. She later was a member of the Shillington Woman’s Club, and past advisor to the Junior Woman’s Club of Shillington

Family was always a primary focus and source of pride in Grace’s life. She and her husband enjoyed many happy days at Porters Lake Hunting and Fishing Club in the Poconos, where they were longtime members. Grace and her husband were gracious hosts to countless gatherings of family and friends.

Grace was an active volunteer at The Highlands, and found her greatest joy volunteering in The Highlands Gift Shop for over two decades. She was also a member of The Highlands Chorus (The Highlandaires) for 22 years, and served on the Residents Council of The Highlands.

Her husband, Dr. John S. Hunter, preceded Grace in death on September 28, 2011. Left to cherish her memory and legacy, Grace is survived by her son, Dr. Philip G. Hunter, and his wife Mary of Bangor, Maine, and her daughter, Susan Hunter Scott, and her husband Dr. Norman A. Scott of Ames, Iowa.

Survivors also include six grandchildren and their spouses: Karen, wife of Charles Korn of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Molly, wife of Richard Fowler, Jr. of North Andover, Massachusetts; Jan, wife of Thomas Placella of Glenburn, Maine; Andrew Scott and his wife Roxanna of Vienna, Virginia; Christy, wife of Matthew Franco of Ames, Iowa; and Jennifer, wife of Ty Coleman of Iowa City, Iowa. Grace had 12 great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Heidi Placella, Jack and Anna Fowler, Gisellle, Christina, and Allison Korn, Madeline, Julia, and Gabriella Franco, and Isabella and Izaelea Coleman.

There will be no viewing. Private interment will be held at the Laureldale Cemetery at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held Monday, November 20, 2017, at 3 p.m., in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Highlands at Wyomissing, Wyomissing, PA, or Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 30 Liberty Street, Shillington, PA.
