Obituary for Fern P. Styer

Fern P. Styer
Fern (Pennypacker) Styer, 90, of Reading, Pa., passed away November 22, 2017 at the home of her daughter, Doreen.

Born on May 10, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Anna A. (Schanley) Pennypacker. Fern is the former wife of Dr. A. W. Styer, Jr. and David S. Diehl.

Upon graduation from Central Catholic High School in 1945, she was employed by WEEU Radio in Reading. She spent several years in Pittsburgh supporting her husband while he attended dental school. Upon returning to Reading, he opened his practice, and they raised a family.

She served as President of the Dental Society Ladies Auxiliary and became very active in Sacred Heart Church, West Reading. She served as a leader in several Cursillo retreats.

Fern was the office manager for Endodontist Dr. Harold Nazimov. She also worked as an Administrative Assistant for State Senator Mike O’Pake. Upon her retirement, she continued to work part-time fulfilling administrative duties for First American Title Company. She attended weekly Wednesday Bible Study Group and most recently volunteered at the St. Ignatius Loyola school library.

Fern was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She embraced her creative side with a love of sewing, counted cross stitch, knitting, crafting, and painting with water color. You could always find her toiling in her gardens which were pictures of beauty.

Fern is survived by her husband of 8 years, David S. Diehl; her four children, Adolph (Buddy) W. Styer, II (Jana); Doreen C. Holmgren (Paul); Amy M. Tahtabrounian (John); and Rebecca A. Steltz (Roy Knieriam). Fern is also survived by a sister, Charlene J. Guidara and a brother, Charles L. Pennypacker. In addition, she leaves 8 grandchildren, Wesley Holmgren (Kait), Jessica Flood (Collin), Nathan Steltz (Alexandra), Greta Costella (Kiel), Charlotte Metzler (Andrew), Claire Kachnycz (Peter), Oliver Tahtabrounian, and Xavier Tahtabrounian; and 7 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Brayden Holmgren, Nora and Cameron Costella, Ava and Olivia Steltz, and Andie Flood, all of whom were the love of her life.

Fern was predeceased by a sister, Bernice P. Mohan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, December 1, 2017, at 11 a.m. in St. Ignatius of Loyola Roman Catholic, 2810 St. Albans Dr., Whitfield followed by burial at Gethsemane Cemetery.
