Obituary for Jerome J. McDermott

Jerome J. McDermott
Jerome (Jerry) J. McDermott, 95, formerly of Shillington, passed away January 3, 2018, at Elmcroft of Reading Personal Care Community.

His wife, Marguerite L. (Spencer) McDermott, died April 18, 2017; May 11 of last year they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Born in Milwaukee, WI, he was the son of the late John M. and Catharine (Heine) McDermott.

Jerry was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the European Theatre during WW II.

He was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle R. C. Church, Shillington, where he was a Eucharistic Minister.

Jerry was employed by Reading Eagle Co. as a printer for 47 years, retiring September 1, 1988. After retirement he volunteered at the Berks County Historical Society and the LaSalle Academy lunchroom. He was an avid Phillies fan and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

He is survived by his four children: James J. McDermott, West Chester; Michael J., husband of Maria McDermott, Bernville; Marianne, wife of David McGoldrick, Havertown; and Therese M., wife of Troy Matthew, Wernersville; one brother-in-law, Edward Spencer; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Simmons. Nine grandchildren: James J., Lee Ann, Courtney and Colin McDermott; Kelly and Ashley McGoldrick; Austin and Matthew Taccetta; and Kayla Matthew, and one great-granddaughter, Blake also survive him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s R.C.C., 420 Holland Street, Shillington, PA 19607. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading.
