Obituary for Sylvester J. Comparini

Sylvester J. Comparini
Sylvester J. Comparini, 95, of West Reading passed away on March 18, 2018 at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was the loving husband of Beverly J. (DeMott) Comparini whom he married on March 12, 1988. Born in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Joseph and Constantina (Sucombi) Comparini. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, West Reading.

A decorated USMC veteran in the 3rd Marine Division and Purple Heart recipient, Syl honorably served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School and an outstanding football and baseball player. Syl loved sports, especially baseball, and had a signing opportunity with the St. Louis Cardinals as a catcher, but chose to serve his country.

Syl enjoyed a career in sales for both Seagram’s and Northeast Distributing Company for 30 years. He enjoyed a 50-year association with Wilson and Spring Township sports. In the 1960’s, he was one of the organizers of Lincoln Park Youth baseball and football organizations, and the committee that brought Coach John Gurski to Wilson in 1964. He was one of the founders of the Wilson Boosters Club. Syl was highly-involved as a volunteer assistant coach under Coaches Gurski and Slemmer and was named Wilson’s Equipment Manager. Syl was a great motivator for many students and athletes over the years, and was inducted into the Wilson High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Scott; step-son Curtis J. Button, husband of Teresa A., Wyomissing; and daughter-in-law Monica M. Button, West Lawn.

He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Ryan J. Button, husband of Shannon, Phoenixville; Shawn M. Button, California; Christopher J. Button, Conshohocken; Hillary M. Button, Sinking Spring; Rachel L. Button, West Lawn; Kimberly A. Button, West Lawn; Zachary J. Button, Spring Township. Also one great-granddaughter, Amaya N. Butler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 23, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, West Reading, with burial to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 6217, Wyomissing, PA 19610, or Mass cards would be appreciated. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
