Obituary for Donald R. Unger, Jr.

Donald R. Unger Jr., 62, a veritable renaissance man, whose heart and soul were forged by living passionately in the crucible of life, passed from life to Light on May 15, 2018, in his Reading residence.

He was the loving husband of Patricia A. (Ford) Unger; they were married on September 17, 1983.

Born in Reading, he was a son of Patricia A. (Bower) Hartman, Blandon and the late Donald R. Unger Sr. and his step-father, Randy L. Hartman, Blandon.

He attended Reading High School, Reading Area Community College, and Kutztown University where he studied Entomology and Environmental Science.

Donald was employed by Reading Tube and Rockcrest Industries for many years. Most recently, he managed the Ganster Karate System Dojo affording him the opportunity to pursue one of his three passions.

Church, family, and karate were most important to him. He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Reading, where he always looked forward to the annual blessing of the dogs. Donald loved his family and was selflessly devoted to them. He adored his two Jack Russell Terriers and his two grand dogs Bronson and Roxie. He studied karate for 34 years, and was promoted to Rokudan (6th degree black belt) last summer. Donald was inducted into the World Karate Hall of Fame in 2016.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Owen M. (Megan C.), Ft. Sill, OK; and Daniel R. (Liz A.), Reading; two siblings, Tammy Unger, CA and Michael G. (Dawn E.) Unger, Wyomissing; two grandchildren, Wesley M. and Leona R. Unger, two nephews, Shane Nigrelli and Corey Unger, and two nieces Sheila Nigrelli and Ashley Unger.

Services will be held Friday, May 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Nativity Lutheran Church, 1501 N. 13th St. Reading, PA 19604. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Viewings will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave. West Reading and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
