Obituary for William A. "Bill" Koontz, Ph.D.

William A. "Bill" Koontz, Ph.D.
William (Bill) A. Koontz, Ph.D., 71, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Cumberland, MD, Bill was the youngest son of Charles M. and Jessie L. (Lenker) Koontz. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his beloved elder brother, Jesse Koontz. Bill is survived by his adoring wife of 39 years, Patricia. He also leaves behind his four admiring children; Angela Campbell, Amy Shughart (Jeremy), Eric Burkholder, and Andrea Huie, as well as his eight grandchildren; T.J., Nate, Ben, Andrew, Emily, Katy, Elly, and Owen. His devoted Dalmatian companions, Sunny and K.C., will also miss his love, affection and of course, his generosity with treats.

Raised in Bedford, PA, Bill attended The Pennsylvania State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and then his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry. His professional career led him in the direction of computer programming and as was usual for him, he was an authority in this field as well. Bill’s infatuation with hospital laboratory science was inherent however, and he both began and ended his career with clinical laboratory supervisory positions at Tower Health System in Reading, PA.

A devout fan of his alma mater, Bill was particularly proud of securing the esteemed “First Chair” honor in the trombone section of the Penn State Blue Band while a student there. He was often noted to say that aside from his children, this position was one of his greatest achievements. An avid reader, Bill preferred Science Fiction novels and particularly appreciated the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling. He found friendship and comradery in the Chandler Lodge No. 227 of the Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania. In particular, the train club sparked his passion and he gleamed with pride at their setup, especially during their annual Holiday Happenings event. He was a devoted professional tennis fan. He salted everything, including bacon, and perpetually carried an insulated mug of black coffee with him. From his meticulously manicured lawn to his perfectly appointed briefcase, he was skillfully prepared for nearly any situation and always with the appropriate tool. And while his interests punctuate our beloved memories of him, more notable was his love of spending time with his family. His delight was evident as he flashed his devilish grin and engaged in light-hearted antics. His contagious laugh permeated the room enfolding everyone into the amusement.

A patient and loving father, grandfather and devoted husband, Bill exemplified unconditional love and forgiveness. His loyal and unselfish heart strengthened not only his family but also those who were privileged to call him their friend. He will be sorely missed by all those whose lives he touched. In the eloquent words of J. R. R. Tolkien, “May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks.” Rest now and breathe easy, our dearest Bill.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be officiated by his long-time friend, Pastor Jim Brashear, on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 11AM at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 430 South 7th Avenue, Reading, PA 19602. A time of calling will be held immediately prior, from 10AM-11AM. Anyone who wishes to share a fond memory of Bill during his celebration of life will have the opportunity to do so.
