Obituary for Bernard J. Roth Sr.

Bernard J. Roth, Sr., 88, formerly of Wernersville, passed away Friday, July 27, 2018, in Mifflin Center.

He was the beloved husband of the late Anne Marie (Murphy) Roth.

Born in Pottsville, he was the son of the late George B. and Mary E. (Toomey) Roth.

Bernard was a 1949 graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School and a 1955 graduate of Sales, Marketing School, Cambridge, MA.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict from 1950 through 1954.

Bernard was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church, Whitfield.

He began working at Swift + Co. in 1955. He moved up through several positions across the country finally earning the plant manager position in Reading in 1964. In 1965, Bernard joined Berks Packing Co., Inc., and retired in 1992 as executive president and plant manager.

Bernard was a life member and past president of Minersville Independent Hose Company; past president of Minersville Independent Hunting and Fishing Club; a life time member of the American Legion, and Veteran of Foreign Wars, Wernersville, Lodge # 6668. He also served on the Wernersville Borough Council, Wernersville Planning Board, and was a life member of the Wernersville Fire Company.

He is survived by a son, Bernard J. Roth, Jr., West Reading; two granddaughters; Mary Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Moody, Camp Hill; and Megan Margaret, wife of Aaron Davis, Topton, and their daughter Ryleigh Colleen Davis. One sister; Ann (Roth) Kilmurray also survives him.

Bernard was predeceased by a son, Michael G. Roth; his daughter-in-law, Colleen C. Roth; one great grandson, Colton E. Davis; and six brothers: Leroy, Bill, George, Edmund, Joseph, and Francis Roth; and one sister, Maria Roth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 11 a.m., in St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church, 2810 St Alban's Dr, Reading, PA 19608. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. A visitation will be held Wednesday, August 1, 2018, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, and one hour prior to the Mass in the church at the above address from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
