Obituary for Margaret Ann Raith

Print
Margaret “Peg” A. (McGarrigle) Raith 93, of Muhlenberg Township died on Tuesday, August 28, at St. Joseph Hospital, Reading. Born in Philadelphia on May 6, 1925, she was the daughter of the late C. Norman and Mary (Bramble) McGarrigle. She was the wife of the late Dr. Charles A. Raith, who passed away on May 27, 2003.

Peg served as the Residence Director of the Reading Branch YMCA for more than 25 years. The “Y Family” knew her high standards as well as her compassion for those who resided there. It is here, at the Y, where she made so many life-long friends with members and colleagues.

Peg’s interest in good government had her actively involved organizing and working in many political campaigns on local, state, and national levels. She and her husband Charles were instrumental in creating the Reading Division of the World Affairs Council. She was also very active in Albright College where for many years she organized the Albright College Garden Party.

Peg will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Gathering the family together every summer on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts was especially important to Peg which she continued as recently as last month. The family who called her “Nonna” includes her daughter, Barbara A. (Raith) Moll wife of James Moll of Sinking Spring, son Mark A. Raith, husband of Sheila C. (Overa) Raith of Mt. Penn; her three grandchildren J. Patrick Moll of Sinking Spring, Maximilian A. Raith of Mt. Penn and Rachel C. (Humes) Manzo wife of Louis F. Manzo of Westfield N.J., her three great grandchildren, Natalie, Mary and Alice Manzo of Westfield, N.J. and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret A. Raith was predeceased by her daughter Linda A. Raith in 1962, two brothers, Harry and Neil, and three sisters Eileen, Patricia, and Helen.

As per Peg’s wishes there will be no services, burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Contributions in her memory be made to the YMCA of Reading or any charity of your choice.
