Obituary for Mary M. Arthes

Print
Mary M. (Dillon) DeAntonio Arthes, 75, of Wyomissing, passed away on September 13, 2018 at Arden Courts, Allentown, where she had resided since August 16.

Born in Baltimore, MD on July 18, 1943 she was the daughter of the late Virginia (Leight) and Joseph R. Dillon, Sr. She was the wife of the late Dr. Federico G. Arthes, who passed away on December 22, 2005.

Mary grew up in Baltimore where she and Guy DeAntonio met, married, and raised four children. In 1977, Mary and her family re-located to Pennsylvania, settling in Wyomissing, PA. It was here that Mary was able to go back to school and earn her GED, an achievement that she, and those that knew her, were extremely proud of. While raising her family, Mary was employed in several different positions, including receptionist at the Catholic Social Agency in Reading, PA.

Mary moved to Ocean City, MD and worked as an office administrator for the City of Ocean City, MD. She also attended courses at Salisbury University studying psychology. It was during this period of her life that she met, fell in love with, and married the late Dr. Federico Arthes. Dr. Arthes and Mary traveled around the world visiting the greatest cities and most beautiful vistas on Earth. Her favorites included Rome, Paris, Hawaii, the volcanoes in Guatemala, and a magnificent cruise around Cape Horn. Mary’s life-sized, carved wooden penguins, mementos of that trip, followed her wherever she lived.

Mary thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Visitors to Ocean City, MD would always stop by to spend time on the beach with Mary and Pop Doc before heading for ice cream or snowballs at night. Mary loved to dance, whether it was with her school friends in her youth or taking jazz/tap lessons when she was an adult. She also was an avid Baltimore Ravens fan who spent several seasons as a season ticket holder sharing her passion, first with Fred, then her children, grandchildren and others who sat and cheered with her.

Mary will be greatly missed by her friends and family. The family, who affectionately called her MomMom, include her four children: Diana L. (Yost) Frick, wife of William Frick of Minnetonka, MN., Colleen M. (DeAntonio) Schmura, wife of Kurt D. Schmura of Middleboro, MA, Dr. Michael G. DeAntonio, husband of Denice S. DeAntonio of Fleetwood, PA., and James M. DeAntonio, husband of Margaret DeAntonio of Kenhorst, PA. Mary was also blessed with three stepchildren as well.

Mary is also survived by a brother, Joseph R. Dillon, Jr., husband of Shirley Dillon, Patricia (Dillon) Stroh, wife of John Stroh, and Kathleen (Dillon) Flaherty, wife of Douglas Flaherty. There are 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, 925 Centre Ave, Reading, PA 19601. Visitation with family and friends will be held Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kuhn Funeral Home Inc.,739 Penn Ave., West Reading. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mary Arthes, to the Alzheimer’s Association National Headquarters, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
