Obituary for Charles Lee Beem

Print
Charles Lee Beem, 71, passed away surrounded by his loving family, Friday, October 5, 2018, in his Wyomissing residence.
He is survived by his loving wife Jacqueline M. (Idyll) Beem, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage.

Born in Richland, Washington, he was the son of the late Charles Clifford and Anna Lee (Alderman) Beem.

Charles served as an Associate Priest of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Whitfield, since 1977. In addition to leading worship services, he assisted in community outreach and coordinated children and adult religious education.

Charles received a Bachelor of Science from Baker University, a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, and a Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Missouri.

He spent the majority of his working career in the field of drug and alcohol rehabilitation. At Caron Treatment Centers, he served as a counselor and later as the Corporate Director of Clinical Services. Through his work at Caron, he helped establish the first “Western-Style” intensive outpatient program in Moscow, USSR. In addition, during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, Charles coordinated and provided services at over 80 weekend retreats for individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. He furthered his profession through teaching graduate courses at Rutgers University and Penn State University, Harrisburg. He’s remembered with warmth and appreciation by his patients and members of the church community.

Charles cared deeply about his family and loved spending time attending baseball games, camping, hiking, and traveling with them. He gained great satisfaction by continuously challenging himself, particularly through his hobbies. As a youth, he excelled at playing the trumpet. He continued to play in his adult years, and became an avid lover of jazz. He was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed being involved in Girl Scouts and Indian Princesses with his daughters. He received two black belts in karate. Charles obtained his pilot’s license in his retirement and loved flying light sport planes.
In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by two daughters: Jennifer, wife of Aaron Baer, Charlotte, NC; and Kathleen, wife of Andrew Jackson, West Lawn. Four grandchildren: Emma and Owen Baer, and Yvette and Emmett Jackson also survive him.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 11 a.m., at Christ Episcopal Church, 435 Court St, Reading, PA 19601. Attendee's may find street parking, or park at the M & T Bank lot, 50 N. 5th St., the 4th and Court St. parking lot, or Lincoln Tower Apartments parking lot, 100 N. 5th St. A reception will follow the service in the church's fellowship hall.
