Obituary for
Charles S. Geiger
Charles Samuel Geiger died on October 17, 2016 at his home in Wernersville, Pennsylvania surrounded by his family. Charles was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on June 11, 1923 to David Heber Geiger and Dorothy Paul Geiger.
After graduation from Reading High School in 1941, and a year at the Peddie Preparatory School in Hightstown, New Jersey, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a radio operator aboard the aircraft carrier Essex in the Pacific Arena.
After the war Charles attended Temple University where he studied electronics. He married Elizabeth Jane (BJ) Zweizig in 1952 and had two sons: Stephen and Peter. He worked for the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) for 32 years, living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Somerville, New Jersey, and Findley, Ohio. While at RCA he helped develop transistors and integrated circuits, and held several patents.
Charlie and BJ retired to the Reading area in 1982, living first on Greenwich Street and later at North 15th Street. They traveled extensively throughout the world, and spent 10 years traveling throughout North America in a recreation vehicle where they met many friends while over-wintering at South Padre Island Texas and Little Duck Key Florida. They moved to Phoebe Berks in 2011.
Charlie was an avid tennis player and golfer, playing weekly until his late 80s. While living in Somerville, he was a member of the volunteer rescue squad, serving as its captain for several years. Charlie was also a member of the Calvary United Church of Christ in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Charlie was a loving and dedicated husband, father and friend - always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Jane Geiger, his son Stephen Charles Geiger and wife Jane Hopkins of Arlington, Virginia, and his son Peter John Geiger and wife Chaleewan Aubboon of Petchaburi, Thailand.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the Phoebe Berks Chapel, 9 Reading Drive, Wernersville, Pennsylvania at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 27, 2016. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading is in charge of arrangements.
The family requests that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Calvary United Church of Christ, 640 Centre Avenue, Reading, Pennsylvania.
