Daniel Anthony Casciano, Jr., 85, passed away December 28, 2017, peacefully at The Highlands of Wyomissing.

He was the loving husband of Anna C. (Rossi) Casciano, also a resident of The Highlands. Daniel and Anna met when Dan and his brother, Dominic had formed the band “The Stardust Quartet." Dan played the saxophone as the band performed at weddings and other events; Anna was Dan’s biggest fan, and a die-hard supporter of the band. This was the spark that led to their marriage on August 8, 1954.

Born in Birdsboro on April 16, 1932, he was the son of the late Daniel A., Sr. and Mary (Tavani) Casciano.

He was a graduate of Birdsboro High School in 1949; earned his BS in Education in 1953 and an MS in Education in 1963 from West Chester University. Subsequently, he received his superintendent’s certificate from Lehigh University.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, proudly serving his country from September 1953 to June 1955. Daniel began his career in the Army as an instructor at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Later, he was stationed in Tokyo, Japan, where he was an electronics expert and oversaw the operation of top secret radar systems.

Daniel was a long-time teacher and administrator at Daniel Boone High School. He began teaching mathematics and physics in 1955. Later, he became the high school Principal, retiring in 1985.

He was inducted into Phi Delta Kappa, a professional organization for educators, and was President of the Principals’ Association of Berks County in the mid 1970's.

While he was a principal, Daniel was the Chairman of the Berks County Solid Waste Authority in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. He was also a Robeson Township Supervisor for 18 years, where he founded the police department for Robeson Township, and was the Police Commissioner. During the devastating flood of Agnes in 1972, Daniel was instrumental in working with Governor Milton Shapp to obtain aid and assistance for the residents of Berks County that were affected by the flood.

An entrepreneur at heart, Daniel owned Dan’s TV Service and was a partner in Casciano Brothers Machine Shop. In 1985, he founded Mansion Heights Builders and completed multiple developments and custom homes throughout Berks County.

Beginning in 1985, Daniel became involved in supporting Alvernia University, where he founded its highly successful continuing education program. In addition, he oversaw the construction of several buildings at the University, including the library, gymnasium and a dormitory.

Daniel volunteered his time on a full-time basis over several years, to oversee the construction of Immaculate Conception Church, school and rectory in Douglassville, where he was a long-time member. The church was dedicated in 2003.

He was a talented businessman, and until recently, was an active, long-time member of the Board of Directors of Elite Sportswear, Reading and Astro Machine Works, Ephrata.

Outside of work, Daniel had many interests including woodworking, winemaking, golfing, and gardening. As a woodworker, he crafted many treasures for his family and friends. Most important to him were his family and spending meaningful time with them. His grandchildren will always remember and cherish his enthusiastic support of all of their activities.

Daniel and Anna had three children: Linda M., wife of Paul Willey, Clifton Park, NY; Daniel A. Casciano, III, who passed away in 1960; and Daniel A., IV, husband of Melanie Casciano, Wyomissing. There are four grandchildren: Nicholas, Kathleen, Kimberly, and Rachel.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 905 Chestnut Street, Douglassville, PA 19518. Viewings will be held Monday, January 1, 2018, at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading from 6 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.
